Are you sitting comfortably ?

In an ideal world, you’ll be sat on a fully adjustable chair which you know how to operate to get it into the optimum set up for you. In the real world, you might be perched on a kitchen stool, a squishy sofa or a garden chair that you’ve liberated from the shed. This is fine as a one-off for a couple of hours, however, it won’t be long before your back starts to send you messages that it just isn’t happy with this arrangement. Things to consider:

  • Optimum seated position is feet flat to the floor, hips ever so slightly higher than knees, does your chair allow this ?

  • Does your chair have an adjustable back rest – your spine is designed to move not stay in a fixed position.

  • Optional arm rests - do they get in the way when you are working on the keyboard ?

  • Is the floor cold underfoot ? An old rug, folded up towel or even cardboard under foot can improve the situation. Wearing socks will help enormously, as will regular movement.

  • A footrest or upturned box, or books with a cushion on it can help to bring the legs into a comfortable position and to take the pressure off the backs of thighs.

  • Wheels are easier for manoeuvring than a chair with fixed legs

  • Cushions can be added as required to give support for the spine and comfort for the rear end.

Any old chair will do for a very short burst of home working, but for anything longer than a few hours, think of your longterm health and find a suitable chair, or make adjustments to those you already have, your back will thank you for it .
